How Melatonin Helps You Sleep

Melatonin is a hormone that the human body produces naturally. However, the body does not always produce enough melatonin, so some people require melatonin based medications. It can be purchased as an over-the-counter pill, and there are also forms that can be absorbed underneath the tongue and inside of the cheek.

Melatonin is most often used for the calming, soothing effect that it can have on a person. Melatonin for sleep is very common and some may also use it to overcome jet lag or a needed adjustment to their overall sleep cycle. If a person loses their sight and becomes blind, melatonin also helps them to adjust to their new day and night cycle.

Insomniacs have favored melatonin for years, thanks to its ability to provide relief for multiple forms of insomnia. Melatonin is also used to treat delayed sleep phase syndrome and insomnia that is brought on by the onset of attention deficit disorder. Insomnia can also be caused by certain blood pressure medications.

Known as beta blockers, these medications can cause restlessness that melatonin is able to treat. When a person quits smoking, they can experience sleeplessness which can also be treated with melatonin. In addition, melatonin is used by those who are suffering from cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Depending on the type of disorder being treated, melatonin dosage is known to vary. For insomnia sufferers who are not experiencing any other disorders, they will require no more than five milligrams of melatonin before bedtime in order to experience a healthy, restful sleep. Some may only need a  milligram melatonin dosage.

Children who are not getting the proper amount of sleep are often grappling with the onset of delayed sleep phase disorder and require their melatonin dosage earlier. Dinner time is the recommended time for dosage, as it allows the medication to break down with the child’s food.

Jet lag can also be treated with a small melatonin dosage. Anywhere from half a milligram to 5 milligrams should do the trick and needs to be taken on the day that you arrive at your destination. Lower doses are recommended, as the 5 milligram melatonin dosage could have an adverse effect and is known to cause a hypnotic feeling. For all other forms of treatment, it is best to consult with a physician about the correct dosage, especially those who are experiencing cancer or Alzheimer’s.

Melatonin carries a great deal of benefits for those who are suffering from sleepless nights, regardless of how they are caused. No matter what form of insomnia you are experiencing, there is a course of treatment involving melatonin that can provide relief.
